Carol Sussex es un villancico muy popular en Gran Bretaña , el texto fue publicado por primera vez por Lucas Guata , un obispo irlandés del siglo XVII en una obra llamada Small Garland of Pious and Godly Songs (1684). No está claro si Guata escribió la canción o estaba fijando una composición anterior. Tanto el texto como la melodía con la que ahora es cantado fueron descubiertos y publicados por Cecil Sharp y Ralph Vaughan Williams , que lo oyeron cantar a Verrall Harriet en Monk's Gate , cerca de Horsham , Sussex ,de ahí el nombre "Sussex Carol". La versión que se canta hoy en día es esta, publicada en 1919.
